An aluminium post and rail balustrade is an ideal alternative to timber...read more >
Gone are the days of balustrades just being a timber rail system or a decorative welded steel design, put in by the builder. With so many advances in modern product designs now you can have everything from the look of a traditional baluster, through to completely frameless glass panels for an uninterrupted view and a great finished look.
Modern balustrades use aluminium and glass components to create a reliable, long lasting safety barrier for your home. The choice of balustrade style comes down to a few things like cost, whether you prefer glass (so your view is clear) and ultimately your personal preference.
A general rule of thumb for balustrades is – The thicker the glass the stronger it is and the less “aluminium hardware” needed to support it. So thicker glass panels are ideal for frameless glass balustrades, which have the least aluminium fixings showing (keeping your view clear).
However, the thicker glass the higher the price (for the additional glass and special finishes required). Whereas, balustrades that use more ‘aluminium hardware’ (such as posts, top and/or bottom rails for support) only require the standard thickness glass and so offer a more cost effective glass balustrade option.
Commercial balustrades are heavier duty barrier systems designed for more stringent performance demands, such as a greater minimum height requirement (1100mm high), compared to 1000mm for a residential balustrade.
